East Coast of Malaysia

After getting back to Melaka from Singapore we decided it was time to hit the road again so we headed straight for the east coast to see what it had to offer. The ride took us through some pretty amazing scenery with very little traffic on the roads but lots of monkeys by the roadside. The largest we had seen yet but were not too keen on stopping to take any photos of them. On our way to Mersing we were pulled up at a Police checkpoint and Sanne was asked to show her licence and was asked about where her number plate was as they are on the front and back of motorcycles here. Next thing we hear is "Oh, you not a man? Sanne replies, "No I am a woman!" With all the police now having a good chuckle the officer no longer wanted to see any paperwork and waved us on. From now on in Sanne will be the one pull up first at any police checkpoints, hoping we get waved on just as easy. Mersing itself did not have much to offer but some cheap hotels, though none of them had safe parking and we were again left being worried about the safety of the bikes. Luckily there did happen to be a 'security' guard on watch at the hotel we did choose to stay at but he spent most the evening with his eyes glued to his computer screen and checking his latest updates on Facebook! Not so sure how great the security was but the bikes were still there the next morning thankfully. We were both a little disappointed with the beaches here, hoping for some crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches, but apparently these are out on the islands which are hard to get to this time of year being the monsoon season. The other problem is having to leave the bikes behind which we are never keen on doing either. We kept heading north and made a few detours along the way, one of them being the Endau Rompin National Park which was a great ride in. Unfortunately we brought no supplies in with us to stay the night. Accommodation was expensive and with no food or water camping was also out of the question. So we sat and had lunch and went for a look at the nearby waterfall. We were both hoping for a bit of an off road adventure but all the tracks were for hiking only! So we moved on. Nothing too note worthy happened along the way, the usual trying to find safe accommodation for the bikes. We finally came across a pretty good looking beach out of town from a place called Kuantan and the first thing we noticed was a bunch of downhill mountain bikers so we went over for a chat and found out a little about the local riding scene, bringing back plenty of good memories from our time living in Scotland and spending our weekends riding in the mountains. Next stop was a place called Cherating a small village by the sea which had to be one of the most humid places we have been yet. At this point we could do with burning all our clothes and starting again as they stink so much. Even a good wash doesn't seem to really to help the matter. The beach again here not so impressive. We did come across a pretty ordinary scene though after an afternoon stroll. Some asshole had a baited fishing line set up from a tree through a small hole in a fence. An unexpected trap for a young water monitor who saw only an easy feed without knowing the consequence of eating what was on the end of the hook. When we first discovered the lizard we actually thought it was already dead. It was not until we got closer we noticed it was still breathing and in a pretty poor state. It was so stressed about being captured it had already broken its own jaw trying to escape. We enlisted the help of a local guy who was running the guest house we were staying at to help free it. For his troubles he was whipped hard twice by the lizards tail. The worst thing was when we had to try to take the hook out of its jaw, the hook had a massive barb which was heavily lodged and was going no where. With each attempt of removing it the lizard was losing the battle so with no other choice we thought it only best to put it out of its misery. A few swift harsh blows to the head and he was gone. Would love to have known the person responsible and try the same thing to him. Some people make me sick when it comes to the treatment of animals. This left a sour taste in our mouths and thought it best to move on. This time making our way back west to the big smoke of Kuala Lumpur.

It was literally: "Hold this!" The locals never do pass up a photo opp.

We kept our eyes open for elephants but sadly never saw one

A new friend made :)

At Kuantan we met some downhill mountain bikers which was pretty cool as we both used to do lots of mountain biking while living in Scotland

In Malaysia you must not bring your snake to the beach!

In Cherating we met this boy on his cool motorbike. His friends were having a good laugh at his expense.

Sentosa Island Singapore

We spent the day out on Sentosa Island, an easy walk or ride on the Mono rail from the Harbour front. This is a big tourist place that has everything from Universal studios to my favourite the Flow rider. I spent 2 hours between the 2 different waves and was punished for every mistake I made. Life was hell for the next few days having so many aches and pains I thought it impossible to have without a single bruise to show for it! All the same I would go back tomorrow and do it all again...Everything here was very pricey so we kept it low key with a ride on the luge and a chair lift ride back to the top of the hill. Apart from that we just wandered around to see what the place had to offer. We managed to score a free ride on the monorail back to the Harbour front to keep out of the rain we luckily escaped on the chairlift, which was great as I don't think my legs would have held up for the walk back. A good day but the rain stopped it a little early.

Just managed to miss the deluge of rain those clouds were holding

Singapore

We ended up in Singapore by bus of all things. After researching and a few phone calls later, the red tape to get into Singapore with our bikes was just too big a hassle and an expensive one at that. Never enjoying leaving our babies behind we were happy that they would be safe at least back in Melaka at Apa Kaba. It was only by chance that we were to come to hear about our fantastic hosts Sam and Goh after Sanne was researching on the Horizons Unlimited web page for places to stay in Singapore. Sam and Goh are the first Singaporeans to travel around the world by motorcycle and have done a great job of documenting their trip on their blog, www.singaporedream.blogspot.com. After exchanging a few emails they welcomed us into their cosy apartment to spend the week. We were not too sure what to expect when we rocked up on their door step a couple of days later but were welcomed with open arms and with the greatest hospitality to boot. We enjoyed dinners together at the local coffee houses followed by a few beers. We were also very lucky to be invited to a friend's house to sample his home brew which went just a little past just being a sample! His apartment had the most awesome views over the city skyline and at the 50th floor was even more impressive. A great night was had meeting the locals and discussing all matter of subjects relating to life in Singapore. As much as I was taken by the city, that is a big thing for me to say considering I don't like big cities, we both found that life here is almost too controlled with over the the top rules and lack of freedom of speech along with the harsh death penalty that is still in place with the highest amount of hangings per capita in the world!
We had one thing we really needed to do here and that was to find some new front tyres for the bikes, with Melaka being out of the question with no stock and high prices. Goh took us on a mission driving all over the place to find some for us and he succeeded only after a break of course for a top up at one of the many coffee houses (missing them now we are back in Malaysia) We scored the tyres for a good price, basically 2 for 1 on Aussie prices. The rest of our time was mainly spent catching the subway which was cheap and efficient to see all the city had to offer. From visiting Chinatown to Little India, Kampong Glam and the red light district which was all Goh's idea, honestly. For Sanne we had to visit Orchard Rd which is a shoppers paradise or so I am told not really being all that interested! It is shopping centre after shopping centre. Needed a beer of 2 after that day. On our walk around we came across a crazy Trans Asian competition to win a car. The deal is, you place one hand on a nominated hand print on a car and hold it there for as long as you can. You are given one break for 5 minutes every 6 hours. That is to eat, go to the toilet and whatever else you can do to prepare for the next 6 hours. This is without sleep or shelter come rain, hail or sunshine. Bloody mad I tell you. While we were there one guy collapsed and was taken away to medical in a wheel chair. Only the strong survive here. Eventually the winner held on for 75 hours and 34 mins to win. Singapore is a place we would like to return to all the more so now having some new found friends to go back to visit.

Melaka

We arrived in Melaka just as the rain started pelting down, think we got our arrival time in Malaysia a little wrong with the wet season kicking into effect! With the usual run around trying to find a place and not succeeding we were escorted to the Apa Kaba Guesthouse. A quiet little place nestled amongst a beautiful lush garden and a safe place to leave the bikes. Always the number one priority when looking for a place for the night. The guesthouse is run by a 3rd generation Chinese family who went out of their way to make us feel most welcome. This was to the point that we went to lunch with them twice and they even cooked us dinner on our arrival back from Singapore. Anytime we needed directions, uncle would walk us half the way to where we were going and tell us a story along the way. They directed us to many places, as per usual we were not to sure what was around to see. Melaka is quite a nice place with a European flavour left by the Portuguese. With colourful buildings that blend with the old Malay to the new more modern high rises. We had only originally intended on staying a couple of days but we ended up staying for about 4 to 5 days while waiting to hear from a friend in Singapore.
