Chiang Rai

By Sanne

We arrived in Chiang Rai after a long day's ride from the Mae Hong Son loop and spotted this quirky looking hotel called the Red Rose Hotel. It looked a bit like a cross between a motel and a theme park. It was like walking into a section of Disneyland, not that I have ever been to Disneyland but in my imagination it would look something like this! A big illuminated board showed pictures of the rooms on offer and after studying them for a bit and pondering: shall we sleep in the Star Wars room, spend a night in Alladin's Cave or perhaps The Bakery we decided  to go with the Thai Boxing themed room! Well, it has to be seen to be believed! The whole room was themed as a boxing stadium - our bed was IN the frickin' ring for god's sake! There was a punching bag, a speed ball, even one of those bells they use to ring fights in with. It was like taken out of a child's fantasy and our childish selves loved every minute of it! So we had a boxing match in the ring/our bed with the supplied boxing gloves. Mark is still nursing his bruises. Anyway, the Red Rose Hotel has got to be one of the quirkiest places I have ever had the pleasure of staying. If you're ever in Chiang Rai, make sure you stay here!

While in Chiang Rai we also had the pleasure of watching Transvestite Cabaret! We were at the local night market when what we thought was girls walked onto the stage and started dancing and gyrating like were they in a strip club, then one of them started singing and it was a man's voice! They were dressed like really skimpy teenage girls and they had the body language of one as well. Flicking their hair and blinking their eyes. It was weird and funny at the same time. It is weird that it's so accepted here in Thailand to be a 'lady boy'. And there are so many of them! Where as it's a taboo most places in the world, it doesn't seem that way here. The lady boys look like they are really proud to be...chicks...with dicks. Nough' said.
